Healthy Athletes, Opening Eyes 2011


Does the Optical-Optometrists and Ophthalmologist who wish to voluntarily participate in vision screenings for athletes of Special Olympics

The Special Olympics is an international non-profit organization and their mission is to offer throughout the year, training opportunities and participation in events, children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
In 2011 our country has undertaken the organization of the World Games Special Olympics (http://www.athens2011.org/).

Along with the games, both at national and global level, athletes have the opportunity to participate in the “Healthy Athletes” (Healthy Athletes). The “Healthy Athletes” which was created in 1996, aims, through free medical examinations to improve health and fitness of contestants athletes.

In “Healthy Athletes, Opening Eyes” purpose is to provide quality vision care for athletes, monitoring the health and integrity of the visual system, administration and construction of appropriate glasses for each athlete (eyewear, sunglasses, protective)awareness among all stakeholders (athletes, parents, coaches) for the important role that vision in sport, education, job performance, and the collection and publication of information about the sight of athletes of Special Olympics.

Volunteer Optometrists and Ophthalmologists from all the world join forces and cooperate to achieve this goal. The benefits of such participation are many, besides the personal satisfaction that one feels when helping a fellow man. The volunteer will have the opportunity to develop his clinical experience and scientific knowledge. We contacted a large number of athletes and familiarize themselves with the care of people with intellectual disabilities and other special features. All Optometrists and Ophthalmologists around the world who have participated in such an event, consider this experience as the most important point in their career. The duration and days of participation of each, during the screening, will be adjusted accordingly.

Participation Process
According to the instructions of the Organising Committee are requested to first come into contact with the clinical director of Opening Eyes, depending on their specialty, and then register as volunteers on the website of Athens 2011 (http://www.athens2011.org /).
