Crete is present in the program “City-Amphitryon”

Two thousand participants in the Special Olympics 2011 Games hosted by Crete, under the “City-Amphitryon” (Host Town Program) to be held a few days before the Games begin. The program was designed in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, after conclusion of the Memorandum and the special launch event on the participation of Crete, a hotel in Heraklion. The government was represented by Deputy Minister of National Defence, John Plakiotakis before which the Chairman of the Organizing Committee Special Olympics Athens 2011, Gianna Despotopoulou and representatives of hoteliers, Crete, shook hands for the full implementation of the “City-Amphitryon.

Host the event was the General Secretary of Crete, Serafim Tsokas, while the “present” given by the Members SW Manolis Kefaloyannis, Eleftherios Avgenakis Costas Badouvas, the presidents LOCAL Chania, Kyriakos Virvidakis, Lasithi and Rethymno Nikos Kastrinakis, Manolis Manolakakis,Representatives from about 20 municipalities of the island and businessmen.

Ms Despotopoulou thanked all those who stand helpers in the program and especially voluntary organizations because, as he explained “… as the organization size is 3 / 4 of the Olympics, but our budget is only 3% of the money officially spent for the Games in Athens. It bears Greece – specific to that period, to pay more money, so we ask for your help in hosting our children. ” In her speech, Ms.. Despotopoulou presented in detail the program and among other things said: “The Special Olympics Games in Athens will host the largest sporting event of 2011 because that year there is no organization corresponding range. Within three months we have 7,500 applications from volunteers, with first from around the President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias. The program City-Amphitryon, we aim to convey in one day 10,000 participants from Eleftherios Venizelos in 80 cities and islands of Greece. The daily attitude is an inspiration to us all. Greece will host a top international institution and my joy is even greater that my hometown is actively involved. Crete warmly embraces people with disabilities ”

The Secretary-General Crete, Serafim Tsokas, in his speech said: “Our island, place orders of Zeus would have a separate role at ease in a very important event. Participate wholeheartedly in the project City-Amphitryon, knowing that the purpose of this exercise is sacred and needs of all of us. ”

The cities participating in the program agree to stay, food and employment to athletes and coaches in a period of 20 to 24 June 2011, just before the opening ceremony of the Games (06/25/2011). The “Host Town Program” has been applied successfully in previous World Games Special Olympics (Dublin, 2003, Shanghai 2007) and looks forward to connecting athletes and escorts with the Greek culture, adapting to the new environment, and informing residents of the participating City of skills and abilities of people with intellectual disabilities. Their commitment to be included in the “City-Amphitryon” have been deposited in Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, Katerini, the Ionian islands, Kastoria, Skiathos, Patras, Olympia, Nafpaktos, the islands of the Saronic Gulf, the Rhodes and Cyprus, covering about 7,500 athletes and accompanying persons, ie 75% of the total 10,000 which is expected to travel to Greece in June 2011.

Chania will accommodate athletes with disabilities from BurkinaFaso, Gibraltar, Monaco, Paraguay, San Marino, Luxembourg,Slovenia and Spain.

The Special Olympics World Games ATHENS 2011 will be held from June 25 to July 4, 2011. In the 7500 Games will bring together athletes and 2,500 coaches from 185 countries, 3,000 judges / referees, 40,000 family members of athletes, 25,000 volunteers and the event will cover 3,000 journalists from around the world.
