Readiness of the Romanian Mission to the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2011

The countdown has begun! There are 100 days until the Special Olympics Summer World Games, Athens 2011!

Special Olympics Summer World Games 2011 will take place in Athens from June 25 to July 4, 2011 and will bring together international celebrities, dignitaries, heads of state and leaders in education, health, business and sport, all present to support the movement of Special Olympics. This world class event will celebrate the triumph of human spirit and courage of the 7,500 Special Olympics athletes from over 172 countries who will compete in 22 sports, showing the world the unlimited potential that we have people with intellectual disabilities. Athens, birthplace of the Olympics, a city which is a legacy of the ancient sport, will now become the symbol of courage, dedication and talent of Special Olympics athletes.



Special Olympics Romania Foundation (SOR) was founded in November 2003 as part of the international sports movement, Special Olympics International (SOI).

Mission: The mission is to organize the Special Olympics all year round sports training and competitions with a range of tests for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, to give them the chance to develop physically, to prove their courage by to enjoy life with family, friends, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. In our view, the social integration of persons with disabilities is based on communication and sport is one of the best ways of communicating at this level.

Vision: Special Olympics programs that aims to develop social integration through sports for people with special needs.

  1. Special Olympics provides people with special needs the chance to discover and develop their sporting potential and skills through training programs and sports competitions.
  2. Special Olympics athletes have the opportunity to become active members of the family and the community they belong.
  3. Special Olympics is an inspiring experience that energy, health, confidence and joy of living.

The delegation will represent Romania in this competition include 50 athletes and coaches. Special Olympics athletes in Romania will have the opportunity to prove your sports skills, willingness and courage by competing in sports such as athletics, basketball, bocce, football, artistic gymnastics and table tennis.

In addition to sporting events, the Special Olympics Summer World Games will run several other programs: Host Town Race Flame of Hope, Health and Sports Youth Sports Program, Family Forum, Youth Forum, Symposium Special Olympics and the Olympic Village.
