Real Time Shipping! the XIII Special Olympics World Summer Games Athens 2011

The official delegations of athletes of Special Olympics, staff and coaches have begun to arrive in Athens from all over the world, the official host city of the delegations at the Metropolitan Expo Center, full of enthusiasm and high expectations for the upcoming World Games. So far, 2,812 people have arrived from 58 countries.

The other delegations are expected to arrive in the coming days, while some have already been installed in cities that will host the rest of Greece, ie in Rhodes, Crete, Evia, Ionian Islands, Macedonia, other cities in mainland Greece and Cyprus. The local organizing committees, welcomed them with traditional Greek hospitality. Hoteliers provided free rooms to all delegations, a very kind gesture, although we are at the peak of tourist season in Greece. In total, more than 25,000 room nights will be offered during the residency program.

Delegations hosted for four days, in 13 regions of Greece before arriving in Athens for the Games. Through a series of events and artistic events, the athletes of Special Olympics will have the opportunity to adapt to new surroundings, to come into contact with Greek culture, to enjoy the natural beauty and traditional cuisine as well as to train for races .

The president of the organizing committee of the Special Olympics World Summer Games Athens 2011 Ioanna Despotopoulou visited the reception center and said: “After 2 years of hard work and commitment, we are very excited to meet most of the official delegations from around the world, Special Olympics athletes and their coaches. Currently we recognize that our effort is very small, compared to the excitement and anticipation of these athletes for the World Games. The smile gives us hope and optimism for the future. That is the reason that once again, I invite everyone from athletes and their families, coaches and our volunteers to attend us in the ceremonies, sporting facilities and the other events beyond sports. I assure you, it will be a lifetime experience for us all! ”

The Chairman of Special Olympics, Mr. Brady Lum, had the opportunity yesterday to visit the reception center of the delegations. “The magic of the Special Olympics begins even before the first event or opening ceremony. Yesterday I had the opportunity to spend the entire day at the reception center of delegation in Athens and to greet dozens of teams, athletes and coaches as they arrived in Greece. For agencies, this marks the beginning of their experience at the World Games. The atmosphere was amazing and everyone was excited! ”
