Therapeutic riding in Greece

The therapeutic value of riding for disabled people was known to the Greeks from the 5 century BC Indeed century phrase that historians attribute to Hippocrates tells us that <riding in the fresh air strengthens muscles and keeps them in good condition>.

The therapeutic riding was introduced in Greece in 1983 at the initiative of Aideen Lewis with a group of children “Spastic” in the Equestrian Club Varympompis. Between 1992 and established the “Therapeutic Riding Association of Greece” – a non-profit and non-government based on voluntary aid organization costs and operation. In 1993, even recognized as a sports club with interests in sports competitions and distinctions in international sports events such as the Paralympics, Special Olympics etc.

Therapeutic riding is an activity which contributes to improving the health of people with physical, emotional or mental disorder.

Despite all the difficulties, from 1983 until today more than 300 children and adults have benefited from the programs of the Therapeutic Riding. These programs, hosted by Equestrian Training Center at Goudi, as well as the riding club Varympompis.

The primary purpose of Therapeutic Riding is a chance to ride in any disabled people who could benefit from it in general.

Therapeutic riding involves different activities.
The ippotherapeia, riding as a sport, therapeutic educational riding, dressage, jumping and driving. These activities provide common benefits identified, and each has unique advantages in this activity .. The horse then becomes gateway to nature.

Too many disabled people never dreamed they could ride, so the idea is fascinating and perhaps frightening for them. Overcoming fear, if any, is the first success.

The rates of therapeutic riding include:
The trainer: he is responsible for the horse. The trainer with the therapist ensures that every rider has the horse is suitable, depending on the needs of the rider (quieter, smoother gait, etc.)

The therapist: it can be a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, psychologist, special educator, trainer special education, according to the needs of the rider. The more knowledge and experience has been a therapist for horse and rider’s abilities, the more we can help.

The driver: he plays an important role for the riders. Top of the underlying liability for the conduct of the horse. Therefore his care is to obey the commands of the trainer – the therapist in terms of horses. Stop – Start of course be watching the reactions of the horse from the outside, so the rider is safe.

The side assistants: the primary purpose of the safety of the rider, but also the obligation to help the rider to perform the exercises, which orders the teacher – therapist.

The assistant’s responsibilities are:

1. To carry out instructions of the trainer

2. Be aware of the program.

3. To support the physical and psychological rider.

4. To ensure the safety and comfort of the rider.

5. Fun of the knight, as part of the course.

H relationship can develop riding a horse can help a young person faced with learning difficulties and behavior or a physical, mental or emotional disability.

Experts through their experience have concluded that it is much easier for these people to see, understand, smell, hear and touch a horse than other people! In other words, young people with disabilities are “stronger” stimulus to trigger the five senses in their relationship with a horse. This is because the contact with a horse should be clear and based on certain conditions. The horses can not cope with complicated messages, and their reactions toward humans is specific. Thus, the relationship automatically becomes a “simple”. Meanwhile, the rider learns to ippotherapeia a pace to keep his balance on the saddle, a sense of space, to acquire agility and confidence in walking and in motion even when downloaded from the horse.

The Therapeutic Riding Association of Greece (TRAG) is a member of the International Equestrian Federation for People with Disabilities (FRDI) which comprises 41 member countries around the world. The club relies on volunteer participation trainers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists and social workers. Also important is the support of the “volunteer helpers” therapeutic riding. Volunteer assistant can be done without everyone having to have special knowledge or experience riding for people with disabilities, and to undertake relevant training of trainers of TRAG.

The club takes some diseases for which appropriate therapeutic riding as neurological disorders, Down syndrome, autism, blindness, deafness, behavioral problems, learning disability, etc.The monthly cost per child is 40 euros, but each case is considered separately. If that is the family can not cover costs, the union took the free education of the child without the financial burden of the family.
